Veterans may use non-combat related military experience to receive transfer credits at FIU. Military credits are awarded towards lower division electives and/or the University Core Curriculum (UCC) in consultation with faculty and the credit recommendations offered by the American Council on Education (ACE). FIU recognizes credit-by-exam mechanisms such as CLEP and DSST, as well as military testing mechanisms such as the Defense Language Proficiency Test (DLPT). Contact our office during your first semester at FIU if you have any questions about your military credits.
Military Credits 101
If transferring with less than 60 credits: You may receive military credits towards the UCC and/or lower division electives.
If transferring with more than 60 credits: Upper division coursework may be awarded at the discretion of your academic department. Be advised that due to the applied nature of military credits, many departments may not be able to award credit towards mostly theory-based FIU courses.
