GSI: Graduation Success Initiative

About Us

What is GSI?

The Graduation Success Initiative (GSI) is an extensive, university-wide set of innovations dedicated to helping you to succeed academically.

The key ideas behind the GSI are simple:

  • Help you find your academic home as early as possible--your appropriate major, a major that matches your interests, abilities, and goals.
  • Provide you with a clear path to success--timely graduation in your appropriate major.
  • Give you immediate feedback and support if you get off your path to success.
  • Remove barriers and add supports for you as you progress on your path to success.
  • Reach out to you proactively with guidance and not wait for you to contact your advisor.

The GSI includes a suite of technological tools which helps you and your advisors stay connected and know where you are going, how to get there, and whether or not you are on the right track:

  • MyFIU — Your FIU home page.
  • MyMajor — A searchable database of information on all FIU undergraduate majors which includes Major Maps (semester by semester paths to on-time graduation).
  • MyMajorMatch — An on-line occupational interest inventory that links your occupational interests to FIU majors.
  • My_eAdvisor — An automated tracking tool that provides you and your advisor with immediate semester-by-semester feedback regarding your progression on your Major Maps.
  • PDA—Panther Degree Audit — includes many useful tools for you and your advisor, such as assessing what is left to graduate, planning how to get there, and registering for specific courses.

The GSI is not just high tech; it is also high touch. A significant number of academic advisors are being hired each year to achieve the 300:1 advisor-to-student ratio that defines best practice nationally.

Advising is teaching, and in that spirit, professional advisors serve an important role in meeting FIU's educational mission. Advisors help you choose the right courses in line with your major, expose you to learning and engagement opportunities, and ensure that you stay on track and graduate on time. The advising process itself helps you gain essential critical thinking and problem solving skills. Simply put, advisors help you develop as a student and as a person!
