Assistant Vice President,
Charlie has been the Director of the Academic Advising Center since March of 2008. Prior to that, he served as the Director of Campus Life and Director of Orientation & Commuter Services here at FIU. Charlie has been working in higher education since 1994, and has held various positions in academic advising, student activities, Greek life & orientation at Clemson University, Bowling Green State University, Heidelburg College and FIU. He holds a Bachelor of Science degree in Mathematics Education FIU and a Master of Arts in College Student Personnel from Bowling Green State University. Charlie has presented at several regional and national conferences and served as the President of the National Orientation Directors Assocation from 2004 - 2007.
Elizabeth joined FlU in 2006 as an Academic Coordinator and was promoted to Assistant Director in 2009. She oversees the academic programs for 'at-risk' students, like the Remedial Program (for students requiring college prep work) and the Retention Program (for students who have been placed on Academic Warning and Probation). Elizabeth has a Bachelor's degree in Philosophy and a Master's degree in Communication. Before joining FlU, she worked at Miami Dade College as both an Academic Advisor and a Vocational advisor for the Refugee Program.
Hazel's focus is on the coordination of Freshman Orientation and the First-Year Experience course. Hazel holds a Bachelor of Science degree in Biological Science, a Bachelor of Arts degree in Chemistry, and a Master of Public Health degree from FlU. She also graduated through the Honors College and completed a Graduate Certificate in Epidemiology. Hazel has presented at international and national conferences, is a member of the National Academic Advising Association, and serves as the Golden Key International Honour Society Advisor.
April has lived in Miami her entire life. She earned both her undergraduate and graduate degrees from the University of Miami: A Bachelor's degree in Psychology and a Master's degree in Education. Upon graduation, April worked at UM in the office of Student Employment and the School of Education. She took a brief break from Higher Education and taught first grade for two years at Kelsey Pharr Elementary. April enjoyed working with children, but missed the college atmosphere and the college students; She is happy to be back in Higher Education.
Maria has earned a Bachelor's degree in Business Administration from the Andres Bello Catholic University (UCAB) in Caracas, Venezuela. After moving to Miami, she earned a Masters degree in Higher Education Administration from FlU. Prior to joining FlU's Academic Advising Center, Maria worked as an advisor and instructor faculty member at UCAB, and as a project coordinator at the University of Miami. Maria has an authentic passion to work for higher education students as they develop and reach their personal, academic, and career goals.
Michael is a transplant to Miami from New York City. He was born and raised in New Jersey, and moved to New York for college. He earned his Bachelor’s degree in Psychology from Fordham University in the Bronx and Master’s Degree in Counseling from Montclair State University in New Jersey. Prior to working at FIU, Michael worked as an advising intern in the Office of Academic Success and Student Retention at Montclair State University, and as a school counseling intern in the middle school guidance office at a K-12 NYC public school in Manhattan.
Jessica is a two-time alumna of FIU and earned a Bachelor’s and Master’s degree in Social Work. She has previously worked in case management and counseling settings and most recently served as a Senior Academic Advisor and Adjunct Instructor at Miami Dade College. Jessica is currently pursuing a Doctor of Education degree in Higher Education Leadership at the University of Miami. She joined us in 2015 and her areas of interest include developmental education as well as first year, transfer, undocumented, at-risk, and first generation students. Jessica also works with the First Year Experience Peer Mentors at the Modesto Maidique Campus.
Emily, a Miami Florida native, holds a Bachelor’s degree in Psychology from the University of Miami and a Master’s degree in Social Work from Simmons College in Boston, MA. She has been a proud FIU Panther since 2012 when she began her career in Higher Education through the Office of Student Affairs at the Herbert Wertheim College of Medicine. Her passion for education and assisting students led her to the Undergraduate Education Academic Advising Team in 2015 as an Academic Advisor where she continues to encourage, inform and guide students through their individual academic journeys.
Charminta was born and raised in New Jersey. She earned her Bachelor’s degree in Liberal Studies with a minor in Mathematics from Wesley College in Delaware. She is now a proud alumna of FIU, earning her Master’s in Higher Education. She loves FIU so much that she decided to stay to begin her career. Charminta believes it is essential to always remind students that when they work hard, find their passion, and use their resources, nothing can stop them from living out their purpose in life.
Senior Administrative Assistant
Belkys was born in Cuba and came to Miami at the age of 3. She joined FlU in 2004 as a member of the Division of Student Affairs and served as the Office Manager for the department of Campus Life. During her years there, Belkys had the opportunity to get involved with several of FIU's student events and activities. In 2011, Belkys joined the Undergraduate Education Academic Advising family and has reaffirmed her love of working with staff and students, while providing support whenever necessary to assist in the smooth operations of the office.
Andrew was born in Miami, FL. He earned an Associate in Arts at Miami Dade College. He is passionate about FIU and is now pursuing his degree in Business Finance. He enjoys the interaction with students therefore in 2014 he joined the Undergraduate Education Academic Advising family as the Program Assistant providing support whenever necessary. In his free time he enjoys spending time with his family and watching sports.
Valerie has over 19 years of experience in academic advising. Originally from Massachusetts, she attended FlU for her undergraduate and graduate degrees, and received her Doctorate in Higher Education Administration in 2005. Valerie loves working at FlU and being part of the Undergraduate Education team. When not in the office, she enjoys spending time with her daughter Samantha, reading and playing soccer.
N. Stud. Exchange
Jamie started her career in higher education in 2002 as an Academic Advisor at Miami Dade College. She joined FIU in 2006 as an Academic Advisor for the College of Business. Since 2007 she has been with Undergraduate Education and grown to become the Program Manager for the National Student Exchange Office. Jamie holds a Bachelor of Arts degree in Psychology, with a concentration in Mathematics Education, and a Master’s degree in International and Cross-cultural Development in Education, from FIU. Jamie serves as the advisor for the National Student Exchange Club at the Modesto A. Maidique Campus. She enjoys interacting with a diverse student population and promotes an international student experience.
Giovanna M. Tello
Giovanna is originally from New Jersey and earned her Bachelor's degree from Montclair State University, where she majored in English and minored in Leadership Development through Civic Engagement and Psychology. In 2013, she moved to Miami and pursued her Master's degree in Higher Education Administration from FIU. After graduating in 2015, she decided to stay at FIU and now advises exploratory students as well as oversees the Peer Mentor Program at the Biscayne Bay Campus.
Sonia came to FlU from Jamaica ¡n 1997, where she worked for Financial Aid at the Modesto A. Maid¡que campus for three years. In 2000, she transferred to Undergraduate Education at the Biscayne Bay Campus. Sonia has a Bachelor of Science in Business Administration from the University of Connecticut. She enjoys working in Undergraduate Education because she gets an opportunity to be of service to students and to assist in the smooth running of the office.
