The Academy provides a large variety of programs, and new programs are added on a regular basis. Most programs are open to all members of the Teaching Community, some may include priority registration categories due to heavy demand.

Graduate Student Programs
  • Graduate Teaching Certificate Program is a self-paced introduction to teaching and is open to all FIU enrolled graduate students.
  • Intensive Introduction-to-Teaching Workshop is a two-day gateway to pedagogy. It is offered once a year, during the week prior to the start of the Fall term. It is a requirement of the Graduate Teaching Certificate Program, but is open to all TA's and adjuncts..
  • TA Forum is a monthly program, held eight times during the academic year (September to April). Each hour long session is devoted to a single topic. Topics are rotated on a 2-3 year cycle.
  • TA Excellence in Teaching Awards are presented annually to eight outstanding TA's selected from among those nominated by faculty and administrators. The program is co-sponsored with the Graduate Student Association and awards are announced during the GSA's annual spring Awards Banquet.
Adjunct Faculty Programs

Generally, adjuncts can attend all programs and workshops offered by the Academy. Additionally, two programs are especially designed for adjunct faculty:
  • Adjunct Excellence in Teaching Awards are presented during the Fall Faculty Convocation (along with the awards to full-time faculty). Three awards bearing a stipend are given out each year.
  • Adjunct Teaching Certificate is a unique program designed to provide adjuncts with an opportunity to hone their teaching skills and enhance their knowledge in pedagogy. The free program is self-paced.
  • See Intensive Introduction-to-Teaching Workshop above.

Open Workshops
  • Topics have included
  • Chat Room Management is a workshop combining technical and pedagogical elements for faculty who teach partially or fully online.
  • Email Management is a workshop in which teachers can develop skills in utilizing Email as a teaching/learning tool while considering ways to manage the flow of information.
  • Orientation to Online Teaching is a session for academic departments and units considering the online environment. It is highly tailored to unit needs and interests, and is geared toward instigating and stimulating intra-unit discussions.
  • Peer Faculty Workshop Series single session workshops presented throughout the year by faculty recipients of the Academy's Travel Mini Grants. Recipients, who attend pedagogy conferences or seminars, conduct workshops on the topics they have learned and integrated into their courses.
  • Problem-Based Learning assists teachers in shifting from a lecture teaching style to an interactive style.
  • Service Learning is a workshop co-sponsored with the Volunteer Center. It focuses teachers' attention on the exciting possibilities for learning enhancement inherent in active participation outside of the classroom.
  • Teaching & Learning Enhancement: Quality Internet Resources is a 4 ½ hour intensive introduction to the new information environment and its implications for teaching and learning.
  • Teaching Online: More than Buttons & Software helps teachers examine the requirements of the online environment and the transformations they need to make in their teaching in order to make the successful transition.
  • The Syllabus on Paper and Online helps teachers assess the quality of their syllabi, place them on line, and make the necessary adjustment to the new environment.
  • Time Management for Faculty is presented jointly with the Human Resources Department. Recognizing that teachers face unique challenges in budgeting their time among the many activities they are engaged in, the workshop focuses on the specifics of the teaching-research-service-personal life relationship.
Customized Workshop Program

Individual colleges or departments may request The Academy to develop specialized workshops tailored to their needs. Such workshops are designed in collaboration with the requesting group.

Mini Grants / Travel Mini Grants

The Mini Grant program encourages full-time and adjunct faculty to design and implement projects to enhance teaching and learning at FIU. Mini Grants are awarded annually for creative projects that demonstrate collaborative teaching strategies or which bring new pedagogical insights and practices to the attention of the entire Teaching Community.
The Travel Mini Grants encourage full-time faculty to participate in professional meetings devoted to pedagogical issues. Travel Mini Grants are awarded annually and require participating faculty to develop a workshop for fellow faculty based on knowledge acquired and applied in their own teaching.

Individual Consultations

The Academy works with individual teachers on any issue of interest. Such consultations may be instigated by referrals from departments or by individual teachers. Consultations are scheduled at mutual convenience and may vary in length and frequency.

Orientation for Faculty new to FIU

The Academy, in collaboration with the Provost's office, offers an orientation for all faculty new to FIU. Held during the beginning of the fall semester, the orientation includes a special workshop geared toward familiarizing faculty with FIU's teaching & learning environment.
